Tax Deductable

Donations for Education

AZ State Seal
  • The state allows tax credits for individuals who make contributions to public schools for eligible activities and programs. Arizona Department of Revenue

    • For example: pursuant to A.R.S. § 43-401 G, a taxpayer may claim a non-refundable tax credit for making contributions or paying fees directly to a public school for support of certain eligible activities. Arizona Department of Revenue

    • The eligible activities include extracurricular activities, character education, standardized tests and certain capital items (playground equipment, shade structures) etc. Arizona Department of Revenue

    • Schools accepting such contributions have requirements (e.g., issuing receipts to donors, reporting to the state). Arizona Department of Revenue

  • ADE runs grant/funding programs that schools and educational organizations may apply for. Arizona Department of Education+1

    • For example, under “State & Federal Grants” ADE provides links and support for application, training, and grants management. Arizona Department of Education

    • The “ESSER Set Aside Funds” page shows how ADE is allocating federal recovery funds for strategic projects statewide. Arizona Department of Education

  • ADE also has systems for school finance, budget & data collection, ensuring transparency of funding flows. Arizona Department of Education+1

⚠️ Things to note / caveats

  • Just because a school can accept donations or contributions doesn’t mean all donations automatically qualify for tax credit or meet all state rules — you’ll need to check eligibility of the activity, the school’s status, and whether the donor paperwork is correct.

  • The tax‐credit contribution system has specific requirements for the school: e.g., the activity must be “sponsored by the district/school”, “optional for students”, etc. Arizona Department of Revenue

  • Some funds (like federal relief) have targeted purposes and strict oversight (as in the ESSER example).

  • The voucher / scholarship / school choice side (e.g., the Empowerment Scholarship Account) is separate from the donation/tax‐credit system, and has its own rules, oversight concerns, and debates. Education Forward Arizona+1
